We
shall refer to Medical Service Ministries simply
as MSM in the
rest of this
website. All the information contained
on this site is at present on just this one page (except for the brief history
of MSM mentioned in the next section), but
may be expanded
as time
passes. What is MSM ?
MSM
is a grant-making trust, founded in 1903
as the Missionary School of Medicine. Its purpose is helping to
train Christians working to improve conditions
in needy communities through both medical and spiritual ministry
– not one
without the other. The book Touching
the Ends of the Earth,
by Canon Philip Price, tells the history of MSM’s
first 100 years, and explains how it changed from a school to a
grant-making trust. You may purchase this from MSM (see the
foot
of this website). Or you may read a brief history of MSM by
clicking here*.
MSM has a few other books for sale which are listed
at the foot of this page. What does MSM do ? MSM
supports Christian workers – both local and expatriate
– in
obtaining qualifications in personal, child, community and emergency
healthcare, in order to help the work of Christian groups with whom
they serve, with the same calling as MSM’s motto: Preach and Heal. How is MSM funded ?
As a faith ministry, MSM uses funds which God has provided for its work. Under God, this work has continued and expanded, using gifts from individuals, churches and other Christian groups, and income from investments. Who may apply ?
We welcome enquiries from Christians of any nationality who wish to train in healthcare, or gain an additional medical qualification in order to help the group or community they are working with. Applicants must be sponsored by a recognised Christian society or community. Training courses for groups may also be considered. Please note: MSM does not support basic professional medical training, ie courses leading to initial qualification as a doctor, nurse, midwife, dentist, etc. Nor does MSM support training for those whose work cannot be considered as involving 'hands-on' contact with patients, such as administrators, pharmacists, etc. How to apply
Applicants
who are sure of their sponsorship (see previous section) should contact the MSM Executive
Secretary, giving a brief outline of the work they are, or will be,
involved in, with brief details of the sort of the training course that
is planned. Suitable applicants will receive an application form. On receipt of the completed form, MSM will take up references. When these are received and it is clear that the applicant is qualified, as outlined above, for an approved course of training, the MSM trustees will be asked to approve the award of a training grant, payable to the training institution. All awards are at the trustees’ discretion and their decision is final. For further information or to make a donation
